Today, we want to introduce you to the famous mountain bike marathon **Fudenas** on Fuerteventura.
### What is Fudenas?
Fudenas stands for **FU**erteventura **DE** **N**orte **A**l **S**ur. The race kicks off in Corralejo and finishes in Jandía. The total route covers 150 kilometers, taking you right across the entire island.
The elevation profile is flat to undulating up to kilometer 110. After that, it gets jagged and demanding—this is where the toughest part of the race begins.
### Organization and Support
Fudenas is organized by the Soria 9 Regiment stationed on the island. The race is held as part of a major military exercise. You'll find at least two soldiers at every junction. Aid stations with drinks and fruit are set up every 20 kilometers, while technical support and massages are ready every 40 kilometers. On top of that, numerous military vehicles patrol the route and two helicopters watch from above.
Many call Fudenas the best-organized amateur bike race in the world.
### Two Formats: Race and Stages
Fudenas is offered in two categories:
**1. The Race Format**
The entire route is tackled in a single day. This format is brutally tough and only meant for well-trained riders. There are multiple cut-off times. Often, only about 400 out of 1,000 starters make it to the finish line. Many underestimate the race, go out too fast, don't eat or drink enough, or struggle with the climate. From kilometer 110, it gets steep and the profile resembles a saw blade. If you've already burned through your reserves by then, you won't make it to Jandía.
**2. The 2-Stage Format**
This version is much more laid-back. Here, it's all about experiencing a fantastic tour with friends and like-minded riders. You'll spend the night in a military camp complete with tents, a military band, and a field kitchen.
### What You Should Bring to the Table
No matter which format you choose: stamina and training are essential. With solid preparation, Fudenas will be an unforgettable mountain biking adventure.
### Registration and Dates
Fudenas always takes place at the end of October. Registration opens in June on the official website. Be quick—the 3,000 spots are usually sold out within just a few days.
